Kirksville R-III's Superintendent will be participating in a joint meeting next Friday with individuals from the public health sector, Truman State University, ATSU and other response coordinators to initiate "just in case" plans across all educational institutions in Kirksville. Attached you will find some information that DESE has shared with school districts.
From the Superintendent:
On February 18, 2020 I held the first meeting with a group of high school students that I am calling the STAC or Student Advisory Committee. This group of 12 students was selected by the high school counselors and was intentionally chosen to ensure a broad cross section of students from every high school grade level.
This was a very insightful and engaging 90 minute discussion. I applaud these students for their courage, passion, and desire to help the superintendent understand things through the students' perspective. Why this group? Sometimes decisions are made related to school and district operations and not enough attention is given to the student perspective. I hope this group can help me "see" more completely.
During this first meeting we talked about a variety of things from vaping and cell phone usage, to school start time and four-day school week for students. From these students view vaping is still a big concern and they feel students are becoming better managers of their phone screen time but recognize that that use can indeed be somewhat "addictive."
At first I was hoping to get this group together at least once per quarter, but at the end of this meeting ALL of them stated they wanted to meet more frequently. Now we plan to meet at least every other month!
Thank you Kirksville for raising such a strong and diverse group of young adults.
